Licences to beg, Norfolk
Senate House Library, University of London -- Special Collections
Overview
A collection of licences to beg in Norfolk. This collection would give a local historian with an interest in Norfolk a very interesting picture of the underbelly of 16th century society not often seen in historical collections.
Detailed usage description
A collection of licences to beg in Norfolk, mostly granted by Edmund Scambler, Bishop of Norwich.
This collection would be of considerable interest to a local historian with an interest in Norfolk, as it gives a detailed picture of the life of the underbelly of 16th century society. The licences name the people given leave to beg and lists the practices that they may lawfully engage in. Although the beggars are named very little other detail is given about them and therefore this collection is unlikely to be useful to family historians.
A preprint of Basil Clarke's paper published in Norfolk Archeaology (1972) is included, and this provides much historical context to the licences and transciptions of several of them.
