'Tourist guides' to places that might be visited by rail on day trips from London in 1843

Detailed usage description

This manuscript is a transcript of a series of articles that appeared in the Athenaeum, 1842-1843, giving itineraries and descriptions of monuments that could be visited in day excursions by railway from London, with notes on the relevant locations' histories. The particular sections are entitled 'Norbury Park', 'Stoke Pogeis - Burnham - Maidenhead', 'Malmesbury Abbey', 'Panshanger', 'Chiddingstone and Hever' and 'Winchester' (twice).

The information contained could be used to build up a rich picture of how an area would have appeared to a visitor in c1843 and the impression of its history that they might have formed.
