This is an account book of a private bank, probably that of James Montagu of Chippenham, Wiltshire, May 1792-Nov 1799. Many of the entries record subscriptions to the 'Wilts and Berks Canal' and the 'Western Canal'. People and families frequently mentioned include the Fludyers of Chippenham, Robert Ashe, the Gabys of Chippenham, Matthew Humphreys, Messrs Whitehead and Howard [of Shipston-on-Stow, Warwickshire], and William Knight.
